Plum Insurance Reports Strong FY24 Growth, Reduces Losses by Half
Plum Insurance, the employee benefits and healthcare platform backed by Tiger Global, has showcased an exceptional financial performance for the fiscal year ending March 2024. The company not only grew its revenue by 2.5 times year-on-year but also halved its losses, marking a significant improvement in its financial trajectory.
Plum Insurance’s Revenue Surge: A 2.5X Growth
For the fiscal year 2024, Plum Insurance reported a substantial increase in its operating revenue, which surged to Rs 41.3 crore, up from Rs 16.2 crore in FY23. The increase in revenue reflects the growing demand for the company’s group insurance solutions tailored to startups and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs). Additionally, the company provides a wide array of health benefits, including doctor consultations, mental wellness support, health check-ups, nutrition guidance, and dental care services.
The bulk of Plum’s revenue came from its insurance commission, which accounted for an impressive 93.08% of the total operating revenue. This revenue from commissions saw an enormous spike of 2.6X, reaching Rs 38.46 crore in FY24, up from Rs 14.6 crore in the previous year. In addition to this, the company also saw a 79.9% growth in its health benefit services, with revenue increasing to Rs 2.9 crore from Rs 1.6 crore in FY23.
Interest Income Boosts Total Revenue
Beyond its core business operations, Plum Insurance also earned Rs 4 crore from interest income, bringing the company’s total income for FY24 to Rs 45.3 crore. This additional income helped bolster the company’s overall financial health, positioning it well for future growth.
Strategic Cost Management: A Key Factor in Loss Reduction
While Plum Insurance experienced significant revenue growth, it also focused on strategic cost management, which played a crucial role in reducing its losses. In FY24, the company’s total expenses dropped by 12.6%, falling from Rs 81.1 crore in FY23 to Rs 70.8 crore. This decline was driven primarily by a 14.1% reduction in employee benefit expenses, which amounted to Rs 54.3 crore—comprising 76.7% of the total expenses.
Additionally, costs related to software license fees decreased by 29.8%, totaling Rs 3.44 crore, while rent expenses rose by 26.1%, amounting to Rs 3.04 crore. The increase in rent expenses reflects Plum’s ongoing investment in its operational infrastructure to support its growing business. Meanwhile, costs associated with health benefits increased by 43.3%, reflecting the company’s expanded offerings in this segment.
Losses Narrowed by 54%: A Strong Improvement
Despite the company’s rising costs, Plum Insurance managed to significantly reduce its losses by 54%, bringing them down from Rs 55 crore in FY23 to Rs 25.5 crore in FY24. This marked improvement in losses, combined with the revenue surge, highlights the company’s efforts to optimize its operations and scale efficiently. Its Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) improved to -39.23%, while the EBITDA margin improved to -53.64%.
On a unit basis, Plum Insurance spent Rs 1.71 for every rupee it earned in FY24, a significant step towards optimizing its operational efficiency.
