BookMyShow Reports 27% Profit Surge in FY24 Amid Strong Growth in Ticketing and Events

BookMyShow Reports 27% Profit Surge in FY24

BookMyShow, India’s leading online ticketing platform, has reported a stellar 27% increase in its net profit for the financial year 2023-24 (FY24), driven by substantial growth in its revenue streams. The company posted a net profit of INR 108.6 Cr, up from INR 85.1 Cr in FY23, reflecting the success of its evolving business strategy.

Record Revenue Growth Fueling the Rise

Operating revenue for BookMyShow saw a remarkable surge of 43.19%, reaching INR 1,396.8 Cr in FY24, compared to INR 975.5 Cr the previous year. The company attributed this growth to its core online ticketing services and a booming live events segment.

Online Ticketing Segment

The online ticketing segment continued to be the backbone of BookMyShow’s revenue, accounting for nearly half of the company’s total earnings. In FY24, this segment generated INR 740.7 Cr, marking a 20.6% year-on-year (YoY) increase. This growth highlights the growing popularity of online ticketing for movies, events, and sports.

Live Events Segment

The live events sector saw the most dramatic growth, with revenue almost doubling to INR 454.7 Cr in FY24, up from INR 237.5 Cr in FY23. This surge in live events reflects BookMyShow’s successful expansion into the domain, capitalizing on the growing demand for in-person experiences such as concerts, theater shows, and sports events.

Company Background and Recent Investments

Founded in 1999 by Ashish Hemrajani, Parikshit Dhar, and Rajesh Balpande, BookMyShow revolutionized the ticketing industry in India when it launched its platform for online movie and event ticket booking in 2007. The company has raised significant funding over the years, including a $100 million Series D round led by TPG Growth in 2018, which valued the company at $750 million.

Earlier this year, BookMyShow faced criticism during the exclusive ticket sales for the Coldplay concert. Tickets sold out within minutes, and many were resold at inflated prices on third-party platforms. The company swiftly distanced itself from these activities, filing a First Information Report (FIR) and being probed by Mumbai Police.

In January, it was reported that global investment firm KKR was in talks to invest between $250 million and $300 million in BookMyShow for a minority stake, valuing the company at INR 7,500 Cr (approximately $885 million).

Where Did BookMyShow Spend in FY24?

Despite its impressive revenue growth, BookMyShow saw its total expenses increase by 40.28%, amounting to INR 1,319.8 Cr in FY24. Here’s a breakdown of the major expenses:

Increased Marketing and Advertising

The company significantly ramped up its advertising and promotional efforts, with spending in this area rising by 47.48% to INR 78.9 Cr, up from INR 53.5 Cr in FY23. This indicates BookMyShow’s continued focus on building its brand presence in a competitive market.

Rising Employee Benefit Costs

As BookMyShow grew, its employee costs also saw a notable increase, rising 24.06% to INR 170.7 Cr, compared to INR 137.6 Cr in FY23. This increase reflects the company’s investment in talent to support its expanded operations.

Growth in Live Events Production Costs

A major driver of increased costs was BookMyShow’s growing presence in the live events market. The company’s production expenses almost doubled, rising by 95.11% to INR 233.5 Cr from INR 119.8 Cr in the previous fiscal year. The spike reflects investments in organizing and managing more live events, a key part of the company’s revenue growth.

Payment to Artists and Revenue Share

BookMyShow’s expenditure on artist fees and revenue share also saw a significant rise. The company paid INR 211.3 Cr to artists, up 103.3% from INR 103.9 Cr in FY23. Payments related to revenue sharing rose slightly by 2.8% to INR 303 Cr, underlining the company’s ongoing commitment to the success of its live event ventures.

Other Key Spending Areas

Apart from the aforementioned expenses, BookMyShow continued to allocate resources to various areas of its business, including infrastructure and technology, to support its growing platform and live event services.

Competition Heating Up in the Ticketing Industry

BookMyShow is not without competition in the ticketing and live events market. Zomato, known for its food delivery services, entered the ticketing sector by acquiring Paytm’s ticketing platform Insider earlier this year. This acquisition signals that Zomato, along with BookMyShow, is positioning itself to capitalize on the growing demand for live events.

Conclusion: A Year of Growth and Strategic Investments

BookMyShow’s FY24 results reflect solid growth in both ticketing and live events. The company successfully expanded its revenue streams, especially in live events, but saw a corresponding increase in costs. With a strategic focus on scaling its live events and ticketing services, BookMyShow is well-positioned to maintain its market leadership. However, its higher expenses and the increasing competition in the sector indicate that future growth will require careful management of costs and resources.

What’s Next for BookMyShow?

The company’s ongoing discussions with KKR regarding investment and its response to criticism around its ticketing processes show that BookMyShow is taking proactive steps to address market dynamics and operational challenges. How the company balances its growing expenses with its expanding revenue base will be critical as it continues to navigate a competitive and rapidly changing market landscape.
