Google brings AI video search to India, with the Gemini model
Google has announced that it is piloting a generative AI-powered video search feature in India, allowing users to interact more intuitively and efficiently with the content of a video through its Gemini AI model. Using Google Lens, you could take a video and ask it questions about what its contents are.
The feature is now available to users who enroll in the “AI Overviews and More” experiment on Google Search Labs. Google has made no indication about how long any given video needs to be to be supported by this feature, however the company said the service is available on mobile and supports only English-language queries.
Google will introduce Google Lens in India – the world’s largest user market for the service – to “meet the rising demand in the country for multimodal search,” where there is a 40% preference for voice communication with Gemini over typing queries.
Other extensions of Google Gemini Live support the free flow of conversations in Hindi, among other Indian languages soon to be launched, including Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil and Urdu.
“In building this next generation of search, we are tailoring Google services to India’s diverse linguistic and communication preferences and pushing forward the evolution of multimodal search,” their statement points out.
