Zepto CEO Hits Back at Piyush Goyal’s Criticism of India’s Startups: ‘We Created 1.5 Lakh Jobs’

Zepto CEO Responds to Criticism from Union Minister Piyush Goyal

India’s startup ecosystem has been booming, especially in the consumer internet sector, with companies like Zepto leading the way in the quick-commerce space. But recent remarks from Union Minister Piyush Goyal raised eyebrows and sparked a heated debate about the focus of Indian startups. Goyal questioned whether too much attention was being paid to ventures like food delivery services, fantasy sports apps, and ice cream brands, rather than to high-tech, deep-tech innovations.

At the Second Startup Mahakumbh, Goyal challenged local startups to “think big,” “think global,” and move beyond just selling products. His comments suggested that India’s startup scene should prioritize the development of deep-tech ventures—such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and biotechnology—instead of consumer-focused businesses.

This sparked a strong response from Zepto CEO Aadit Palicha, who took to defending the value of India’s consumer internet startups, arguing that they, too, are driving significant economic growth and employment.

Goyal’s Remarks: A Call for Change?

At the event, Goyal emphasized that India has around 1,000 deep-tech startups, a number he described as “disturbing.” His suggestion that startups should go beyond “dukandari” (selling things) and aim for global success resonated with many. He urged Indian entrepreneurs to evolve, be bold, and think bigger, highlighting the need for startups to create technologies that will change the world.

He also pointed out that other countries had embraced deep-tech and were leading in this space, urging India to follow suit. But his comments raised questions: Do all startups need to focus solely on high-tech to be successful? Or do consumer-focused businesses also play a crucial role in the economy?

Zepto CEO Aadit Palicha Defends India’s Consumer Internet Startups

Zepto—a 10-minute grocery delivery startup co-founded by Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya Vohra—has seen tremendous success in the quick-commerce space. However, Palicha, like many other tech leaders, disagreed with Goyal’s dismissive view of consumer internet startups.

Speaking out in defense of consumer startups, Palicha argued that these ventures are just as critical to the Indian economy as deep-tech companies. “It’s easy to criticize, but look at the jobs we’ve created,” Palicha said. Zepto, he pointed out, has helped create 1.5 lakh jobs (150,000 jobs) across the country, providing significant employment opportunities, especially in cities with large populations. For him, this is a clear example of the value consumer-focused startups bring to the table.

What Zepto Has Achieved: More Than Just Quick Deliveries

Zepto, like other quick-commerce platforms, provides ultra-fast delivery services for groceries, offering customers the convenience of getting their essentials in as little as 10 minutes. In a time when speed, convenience, and reliability are key, these startups have become indispensable for urban living.

But what’s often overlooked is the broader impact on India’s economy. Zepto and similar startups not only help consumers access products quickly but also fuel a wide range of other industries, including logistics, technology, warehousing, and supply chains.

For Zepto alone, providing fast deliveries isn’t just about selling groceries—it’s about revolutionizing the way people shop, optimizing supply chains, and, importantly, creating thousands of jobs for delivery personnel, warehouse workers, tech developers, and customer service agents.

Why Consumer Internet Startups Matter for India

1. Creating Jobs and Economic Growth

The scale of job creation within the consumer internet space is undeniable. Zepto alone has generated thousands of jobs, contributing to the livelihoods of many individuals, from delivery drivers to warehouse managers. These roles provide steady income and job security, which is crucial in India, where employment opportunities can sometimes be scarce.

Beyond just Zepto, companies like Swiggy, Zomato, and Blinkit have also created hundreds of thousands of jobs in India, many of which are in sectors that don’t traditionally see much high-tech innovation but are vital to the economy.

2. Empowering the Digital Economy

Consumer internet startups are also contributing significantly to India’s digital economy. As India continues to transition toward a cashless society, companies like Zepto are playing a role in driving digital payments, improving e-commerce infrastructure, and making digital technology more accessible to everyday consumers.

These startups help create inclusive growth by making digital services accessible to millions of people, including those who may not have had easy access to tech before. The focus here is less on deep-tech and more on reaching the masses with user-friendly digital solutions.

3. The Rise of Quick Commerce and Changing Consumer Behavior

Quick commerce platforms like Zepto are tapping into consumer behavior shifts driven by the demand for speed and convenience. As more people turn to online shopping for daily essentials, these startups are stepping in to bridge the gap between the local store and the consumer’s doorstep. This shift is not just about delivering products quickly; it’s about rethinking traditional business models, supply chains, and customer engagement.

4. Innovation Doesn’t Have to Mean Deep-Tech

While deep-tech is essential for India’s future, consumer startups are also innovative in their own right. From improving last-mile delivery logistics to optimizing product discovery algorithms, consumer internet startups are continuously evolving to meet the needs of the market.

It’s not always about creating the next big AI or biotech breakthrough; it’s also about innovating in everyday life. The user experience, speed, and convenience that these startups offer are innovations that make life easier for millions of people, especially in urban areas.

The Need for a Balanced Startup Ecosystem

While deep-tech startups play a crucial role in shaping India’s future, consumer internet startups shouldn’t be dismissed as trivial ventures. The key to India’s growth lies in a balanced startup ecosystem, where both deep-tech and consumer internet startups can thrive together. Both sectors have the potential to drive economic growth, job creation, and technological innovation—just in different ways.

In fact, many consumer-focused companies are leveraging deep-tech in their own operations. For instance, platforms like Zepto are using AI, machine learning, and data analytics to optimize delivery routes, predict consumer demand, and improve customer satisfaction.

Embracing the Diversity of India’s Startup Ecosystem

Aadit Palicha’s defense of consumer internet startups serves as a reminder that India’s startup ecosystem is diverse and multi-faceted. Whether it’s deep-tech innovations or consumer-focused ventures, all types of startups contribute to the growth and development of the economy.

Rather than focusing on a single category of innovation, we should recognize the value that each type of startup brings to the table. As India continues to position itself as a global startup hub, it’s crucial to support all kinds of entrepreneurship, from high-tech ventures to consumer-driven platforms.
