Inside Groww’s Dominance: 3 Factors Driving India’s Leading Retail Broker Ahead of IPO

India’s retail investing landscape has been rapidly evolving over the past decade, with online stockbrokers emerging as the go-to choice for millions of investors. At the forefront of this digital investing revolution is Groww, a Bengaluru-based fintech company that has strengthened its position as India’s largest retail broker. As the company gears up for its IPO, it is clear that its success is no accident but the result of strategic growth, operational discipline, and a relentless focus on its clients.

According to Nuvama Institutional Equities, Groww now commands 26.3% of India’s active retail client base as of September 2025, firmly cementing its lead over competitors like Angel One. This growth has been driven by three core factors: surging client base and trading volumes, a robust core broking business, and disciplined cost management. Together, these elements have positioned Groww as a dominant player in one of the world’s fastest-growing online broking markets.

1. Surging Client Base and Trading Volumes

Groww’s rise has been powered first and foremost by its ability to attract and retain a rapidly expanding client base. Between FY21 and FY25, Groww’s active client base grew at a staggering compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 101.7%, significantly higher than the industry average of 27% and far exceeding Angel One’s 48.3% growth during the same period.

By September 2025, Groww had 11.9 million active clients, translating into a 26.3% market share, a gain of more than 2,200 basis points since FY21. The brokerage added 51% of new NSE active clients in FY24 and 40% in FY25, leaving Angel One’s share of new clients far behind at 22.6% and 17.4%, respectively.

Trading volumes have mirrored this growth in client numbers. In the cash segment, active clients increased 47.7% between FY24 and Q1 FY26, reaching 10.3 million. This surge lifted Groww’s retail average daily trading volume (ADTV) share by 1,048 basis points to 23.1%. Even though the number of F&O active clients declined by 25.9%, Groww’s derivative ADTV share climbed 684 basis points to 14.4%, indicating higher engagement among existing traders.

This combination of rapid client acquisition and growing trading activity has allowed Groww to scale efficiently while deepening its penetration in India’s retail investing market, setting the stage for a strong IPO performance.

2. Core Broking Remains the Growth Engine

While some fintech firms diversify too quickly into multiple financial products, Groww has kept its focus on core broking, which remains the backbone of its revenue. In FY25, core broking contributed 84.6% of the company’s revenue and still accounted for 79.6% in Q1 FY26, compared with Angel One’s 63% and 60.4% in the same periods.

Groww’s order intensity—0.6 orders per client per day in FY25 versus Angel One’s 0.9—reflects a broader, more diversified retail client base, where investors engage in multiple market segments rather than relying heavily on high-risk derivatives. This strategy has paid off: Groww’s F&O revenue share fell from 90.2% in FY24 to 62% in Q1 FY26, reducing dependency on volatile derivative trading.

Nuvama estimates that even a 5% decline in F&O orders would reduce Groww’s revenue, EBITDA, and APAT by only 2.5%, 4.8%, and 4.4%, respectively. By contrast, the same decline would impact Angel One’s numbers more severely, with a 10% drop in EBITDA and 5.2% in APAT, highlighting Groww’s resilient business model and diversified revenue streams.

This focus on core broking has enabled Groww to build a strong foundation that can support the introduction of newer financial products, such as lending, asset management, and insurance, while remaining profitable.

3. Cost Discipline and Operational Efficiency

Another pillar of Groww’s dominance is its disciplined approach to costs, particularly in marketing and customer acquisition. While marketing is a major expense for many fintech companies, Groww has kept its marketing spend to just 12–12.5% of revenue in FY25 and Q1 FY26, well below Angel One’s 20–22.6%.

Despite lower marketing outlays, Groww has achieved remarkable client activation rates above 33%, compared with Angel One’s 22.5–27.5%. The company has also driven down its customer acquisition cost (CAC) to Rs 616 per client in FY25, down from Rs 807 in FY24. On an activated-client basis, CAC is just Rs 1,441 versus Angel One’s Rs 6,076, demonstrating superior efficiency in acquiring and retaining clients.

These efficiencies have directly contributed to high profitability, with EBITDA margins reaching 59.7% and a return on equity (RoE) of 49.5% in FY25, putting Groww among the most profitable retail brokers in India. By keeping costs under control while expanding its user base, Groww has created a scalable and sustainable business model.

Looking Ahead: Optionality and Growth Opportunities

While Groww’s current dominance rests on core broking, the company is well-positioned to capitalize on adjacent financial services markets. Its existing user base, operational infrastructure, and brand reputation give it significant optionality in areas like lending, insurance, and mutual funds. These segments are nascent today but could unlock significant revenue streams over the next few years, complementing its already strong brokerage business.

Moreover, with India’s retail investing ecosystem growing rapidly, driven by increasing financial literacy and digital adoption, Groww is strategically positioned to capture a disproportionate share of new investors entering the market. The company’s scalable model, strong client engagement, and operational discipline provide a solid base to maintain leadership even as competition intensifies.

Groww’s dominance in India’s retail investing market is the result of three interlocking factors:

  1. Rapidly growing client base and trading volumes,
  2. A resilient core broking business with diversified revenue streams, and
  3. Disciplined cost management driving profitability and scalability.

As the company prepares for its IPO, these strengths position Groww as not just a market leader but a benchmark for operational excellence in fintech. Investors and market watchers alike will be keeping a close eye on the company’s next moves, as its growth story mirrors the broader digital transformation of India’s financial markets.

Groww’s trajectory shows that scale, focus, and efficiency can triumph over hype, making it a blueprint for success in the modern fintech era. With its IPO on the horizon, the company is poised to cement its place at the heart of India’s retail investing boom, offering a compelling case for both long-term investors and fintech enthusiasts.
