AquaExchange, an innovative aquaculture tech startup based in Bhimavaram, has announced a remarkable 36% increase in revenue for the fiscal year ending March 2024. The company’s revenue from operations reached Rs 104.88 crore, up from Rs 76.73 crore in the previous year, showcasing its resilience in a challenging market environment.
Steady Growth Amid Challenges
Including other income sources, AquaExchange’s total revenue for FY24 amounted to Rs 105.10 crore. This growth comes on the heels of a $6 million Series A funding round in January 2024, led by Ocean 14 Capital and supported by existing investors Endiya Partners and Accion Venture Labs. The funds are aimed at bolstering the startup’s efforts to enhance product offerings and expand market reach.
Focus on Product Innovation
Founded with a mission to cater to the specific needs of aquaculture farmers, AquaExchange offers a range of technology-driven solutions designed to boost crop yields, minimize risks, and tackle rising input costs. Their flagship products include PowerMon, which aids in power management, and AquaBot, an automated feeding solution that enhances operational efficiency.
Rising Costs Impact Profitability
Despite the impressive revenue growth, AquaExchange faced a steep rise in operational expenses during FY24. Total expenses surged to Rs 117 crore, primarily driven by increased material costs, which jumped from Rs 71.18 crore in FY23 to Rs 94.36 crore in FY24. Additionally, employee benefit expenses soared nearly 3.85 times, reaching Rs 13.10 crore, reflecting the company’s commitment to attracting top talent to fuel its growth.
Finance costs nearly tripled, indicating a rise in borrowing or interest rates, while depreciation expenses rose to Rs 3.18 crore as AquaExchange continued to invest in its technological infrastructure.
Losses Increase Despite Revenue Growth
Unfortunately, the increase in expenses overshadowed the revenue gains, resulting in net losses of Rs 9.35 crore for FY24—an alarming 92% rise from the previous year. This spike in losses highlights the impact of escalating operational costs, particularly in employee and material expenses.
