Altum Credo Snags $19.5 Million from UK’s Top Investor — Poised to Revolutionize Affordable Housing Finance in India

Altum Credo Home Finance just scored a massive boost, raising $19.5 million (Rs 170 crore) from British International Investment (BII), the UK’s premier development finance institution. This fresh equity injection will fuel the Pune-based affordable housing lender’s aggressive expansion plans across southern and western India.

Why This Funding Matters

Altum Credo isn’t your typical home finance company. Since its launch in 2016, it’s carved out a niche by focusing on long-term home loans for urban and semi-urban customers with informal or semi-formal incomes — a market often ignored by traditional lenders.

The new capital from BII, a trusted global impact investor, will not only strengthen Altum Credo’s financial foundation but also accelerate its reach, helping more Indians access affordable homeownership.

A Proven Track Record of Growth

This $19.5 million round follows an earlier $40 million raise in April 2024, led by Z3Partners and Oikocredit, bringing Altum Credo’s total funding to a solid $80 million so far.

The company combines a tech-enabled loan origination and underwriting platform with a strong local presence on the ground, cutting through operational bottlenecks that often plague affordable housing finance.

What Sets Altum Credo Apart?

Unlike traditional banks, Altum Credo specializes in serving customers with informal income streams — think small business owners, daily wage earners, and others whose incomes don’t fit the usual banking criteria.

By blending technology with boots-on-the-ground operations, the company simplifies access to long-tenure loans, making homeownership possible for millions in India’s rapidly growing urban and semi-urban markets.

The Road Ahead

With the new funding, Altum Credo plans to deepen its presence in southern and western India, expanding its footprint and loan portfolio.

As India’s affordable housing market continues to grow, companies like Altum Credo are critical players, bridging the credit gap for underserved borrowers and supporting government initiatives to boost housing access.
