BharatPe’s Key Executives, CHRO Smriti Handa and Chief Data Scientist, Depart

BharatPe Faces Leadership Shakeup as Key Executives Depart

In a significant leadership change, Smriti Handa, the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) at BharatPe, and Ritesh Mohan Srivastava, the company’s Chief Data Scientist, are set to leave the organization. Their departures mark another shakeup in the rapidly evolving fintech company, which has been undergoing substantial leadership restructuring.

Smriti Handa’s Exit: A New Chapter Abroad

Smriti Handa joined BharatPe in April 2022 as its CHRO, bringing a wealth of experience to the role. Before joining the fintech giant, she was the Global Talent Acquisition Director at Reckitt. Her time at BharatPe was marked by her work on driving various HR initiatives that were crucial for the company’s growth, especially as it scaled its operations during a period of high ambition and growth.

A BharatPe spokesperson confirmed Handa’s exit, stating, “Ms Smriti Handa is moving on from BharatPe to pursue exciting career opportunities abroad. She has been instrumental in spearheading various HR initiatives, and her efforts have made a lasting impact. As she embarks on a new chapter, we extend our heartfelt wishes for her continued success.”

Her departure comes at a time when BharatPe is in the midst of a transformative phase, with several leadership changes aimed at bolstering the company’s long-term growth strategy.

Ritesh Mohan Srivastava’s Departure Unconfirmed

While Ritesh Mohan Srivastava, BharatPe’s Chief Data Scientist, also steps down, the company has yet to release an official statement confirming his exit. Srivastava joined BharatPe in July 2022 with a mandate to drive innovation and enhance the company’s data capabilities. Prior to BharatPe, Srivastava was an advisory board member at N44 Capital, where he gained experience in data strategy and analytics.

His role at BharatPe included shaping data strategies to improve product offerings and customer experience. The company’s spokesperson refrained from commenting further on his departure, leaving industry insiders wondering about the reasons behind this exit.

BharatPe’s Leadership Revamp: A Vision for the Future

These high-profile exits come just months after BharatPe made significant leadership changes across its core business units. In April 2024, the company reshuffled leadership in its three primary verticals, including:

  • Resilient Innovations Private Limited (merchant app)
  • Resilient Payments Private Limited (payment unit)
  • Resilient Digi Services Private Limited (lending unit)

Along with these organizational shifts, Nalin Negi was appointed as BharatPe’s full-time CEO. Negi had previously been serving as the interim CEO for over a year before securing the permanent role. Under his leadership, BharatPe has witnessed notable growth, with revenues soaring from Rs 119 crore in FY21 to Rs 1,426 crore in FY24.

Moreover, the company’s losses have been significantly reduced, dropping by 50% to Rs 474 crore in FY24, compared to Rs 941 crore the previous year.

A Positive Outlook Despite Leadership Shifts

Despite the leadership changes and the departure of key executives, BharatPe is showing signs of resilience and growth. The company has made strides in scaling its business across various verticals and appears poised for further expansion. One of the most notable aspects of BharatPe’s turnaround has been its improved financial performance, particularly in terms of revenue and loss reduction.

This financial recovery follows the company’s settlement with Ashneer Grover, BharatPe’s former co-founder and managing director. The resolution of their long-standing differences has provided a sense of stability within the company, which is crucial for its continued growth and success.

What Does the Future Hold for BharatPe?

While the departures of Handa and Srivastava are significant, they also open up opportunities for BharatPe to reshape its leadership and adapt to the evolving fintech landscape. As the company navigates its way through the competitive fintech ecosystem, these leadership transitions will play a pivotal role in determining its future trajectory.

The question now is how BharatPe will manage these changes and continue to thrive in the highly competitive fintech sector. The company’s recent efforts to reduce losses and ramp up revenue give it a solid foundation to weather these leadership shifts and emerge stronger.

Conclusion: A Crucial Period of Transition for BharatPe

BharatPe’s recent leadership changes, including the departure of Smriti Handa and Ritesh Mohan Srivastava, signal a critical period of transition for the company. While the company’s growth has been impressive, with revenue increases and a reduction in losses, these shifts in leadership could influence the direction BharatPe takes in the coming years.

As the company strives to solidify its position in the fintech market, it will be essential to see how it adapts to these changes and continues to innovate in its core business segments. BharatPe’s recent success, particularly in improving its financial performance, suggests that despite these departures, it remains on a path toward long-term growth and stability.
