How TruthIn’s Barcode Scanning App is Empowering Health-Conscious Consumers in India

Empowering Health-Conscious Consumers with Technology

India’s growing health-consciousness has transformed the way consumers approach food, personal care, and wellness. With millennials and families increasingly seeking healthier alternatives, the demand for transparency in product ingredients and nutrition has surged. In fact, India’s health food market is set to reach a staggering $30 billion by 2028, growing at a rate 1.5 times faster than the overall packaged food industry.

However, despite this growing awareness, there remains a gap. Packaged and ultra-processed foods still dominate the market, with many products promoting misleading claims. This is where TruthIn, a barcode scanning app developed by NatFirst, is stepping in to bridge the gap and empower Indian consumers to make informed, healthier choices.

The Story Behind TruthIn: A Personal Awakening

The founder of NatFirst, Ravi Teja Putrevu, was no stranger to the consequences of unhealthy food choices. In 2022, after undergoing surgery to remove a tumor caused by acromegaly, a rare pituitary condition, Ravi experienced a transformative shift in his lifestyle. As he scrutinized the nutritional labels on food packaging, he discovered significant discrepancies between marketing claims and actual ingredients.

Driven by this awakening, Ravi teamed up with his cousin Raghav and medical expert Dr. Aman Basheer Sheikh to launch NatFirst and develop the TruthIn app. TruthIn aims to provide users with a clear understanding of food and personal care product ingredients by decoding labels and offering personalized nutritional insights.

What is TruthIn? A Barcode Scanning App Revolutionizing Health Choices

TruthIn’s core offering is a user-friendly mobile app that uses AI, augmented reality (AR), and data analytics to help consumers make healthier food and personal care choices. The app allows users to scan barcodes of packaged foods, cosmetics, and personal care products to instantly access detailed nutritional data, including health scores and insights into the ingredients.

How Does TruthIn Work?

  • Barcode Scanning: With a simple scan, TruthIn reveals ingredient details, nutritional profiles, and personalized insights based on the user’s health requirements.
  • AI-Powered Insights: The app’s proprietary TruthIn Rating System uses AI to evaluate and rate products based on factors such as sugar, fat, and artificial additives, making it easier for consumers to navigate complex labels.
  • Personalization: TruthIn offers personalized recommendations based on factors like age, gender, and health conditions, ensuring users get the most relevant nutritional advice.

Since its launch in July 2023, TruthIn has garnered over 5 lakh downloads and boasts 85K+ monthly active users. The app is helping consumers understand product quality and avoid ultra-processed foods that could contribute to lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension.

Overcoming Challenges: Building TruthIn’s Tech Stack

While the vision was clear, the journey to developing TruthIn’s app was far from simple. Initially, the founders relied on online data from platforms like Swiggy, Amazon, and BigBasket to gather product information. However, they quickly realized that the data was often unreliable and inconsistent with the product packaging. To address this, the team took the more difficult route, visiting supermarkets to photograph products and manually collect data.

This approach, though time-consuming, ensured that the information on the app was accurate and up-to-date. However, as the product database grew, so did the complexity of managing data. This led the team to develop a Data Discovery Platform (DDP), which automates the process of image collection, data extraction, and quality checks, reducing processing times to 15-20 minutes per product.

Refining the Tech Stack for Scalability

In the early days, TruthIn’s app was built using React, but the team soon realized that it wasn’t scalable on both iOS and Android. To resolve this, they transitioned to Flutter, ensuring the app worked seamlessly across platforms.

The founders also faced challenges in using machine learning algorithms for data processing. As the data volume increased, they upgraded to more advanced systems, allowing for faster and more accurate product evaluations. Today, the app’s backend processes thousands of products, thanks to a powerful AI-driven system.

The TruthIn Rating System: Transparent and User-Friendly

One of the standout features of TruthIn is its TruthIn Rating System, designed to provide consumers with a simple yet effective way to evaluate products. The founders studied global rating systems, such as the Health Star Rating in Australia and Nutri-Score in France, but found these systems lacking when it came to ingredient quality.

TruthIn’s rating system takes into account not only nutritional content but also ingredient quality, offering ratings based on:

  • Sugar levels
  • Saturated fats
  • Presence of artificial additives
  • Ingredient sources (natural vs. synthetic)

This focus on ingredient quality makes TruthIn more comprehensive than other rating systems, offering an advantage to health-conscious consumers looking for more than just calorie counts.

Future Plans: Scaling to B2B and Collaborating with Regulators

While TruthIn’s app is currently aimed at consumers, the company is also eyeing opportunities in the B2B (business-to-business) space. The app’s robust tech stack and comprehensive product data make it an ideal solution for e-commerce platforms, especially those in compliance with FSSAI regulations.

In the future, NatFirst plans to offer its TruthIn Rating System as a service to businesses, helping them improve product transparency and comply with health regulations. The company is already in talks with Amazon and other quick-commerce platforms like Blinkit and Swiggy to integrate the system for better product classification and search filtering.

Additionally, NatFirst is pursuing patents for the TruthIn Rating System and seeking collaboration with regulatory bodies like the National Institute of Nutrition and FSSAI to make the rating system more credible and transparent.

The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities

Despite its rapid growth, TruthIn is still in the pre-revenue stage, and the founders face several challenges as they scale the app. Their focus for the near future includes refining the user experience, improving monetization strategies, and expanding the app’s reach to more consumers.

The company also plans to roll out new features such as personalized serving size recommendations and enhance the B2B offerings to further establish TruthIn as a leading solution for health-conscious consumers and businesses alike.

Conclusion: A Healthier, More Informed Future

With increasing health risks and a rise in lifestyle diseases, TruthIn is making a significant impact by helping consumers make smarter choices for a healthier life. As the app continues to grow, its focus on transparency, AI-driven insights, and collaboration with industry players positions it well for the future.

Through its innovative barcode scanning technology and personalized health insights, TruthIn is helping millions of Indians navigate the complex world of packaged foods and personal care products, one scan at a time.
