How ECOWRAP Is Revolutionizing Waste Management in Jaipur with AI-Driven Solutions

As India’s population surges beyond 1.45 billion, the country faces a growing waste management crisis. With over 50 million metric tonnes (MMT) of municipal solid waste generated annually, this number is projected to reach 125 MMT by 2031. Despite the 96.8% waste collection rate, nearly 28% of it ends up in landfills, exacerbating environmental concerns.

Recognizing the urgent need for change, a group of entrepreneurs from Jaipur founded ECOWRAP, a tech-enabled platform designed to make waste segregation and management more efficient, sustainable, and community-driven. Led by Ajay Buri, a graduate of IIT-Kharagpur, and his team, ECOWRAP is focused on solving the challenge of source segregation, ensuring that waste is correctly sorted into biodegradable, recyclable, and non-recyclable categories.

The startup’s innovative solution? Dustbins equipped with IoT sensors that track waste levels and encourage proper segregation through real-time data. The system also integrates with an app for convenient waste collection and monitoring, fostering trust and accountability in the community.

But ECOWRAP’s impact doesn’t stop at just waste collection. The startup works with rural self-help groups to compost organic waste and upcycle non-recyclable materials into décor items, contributing to both sustainability and economic empowerment for marginalized communities.

With over 1,500 bulk waste generators as clients and a partnership with the Jaipur Municipal Corporation, ECOWRAP’s tech-driven approach has already diverted over 11,000 metric tonnes of waste from landfills and saved more than 21,000 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. The startup employs an AI-powered system that sorts waste into categories, optimizing waste collection routes and reducing costs through decentralised, third-party logistics.

In addition to waste collection, ECOWRAP offers an incentive system using AI that rewards users for accurate waste segregation. The platform’s app also features a chatbot to handle queries and complaints, enhancing user engagement.

Through strategic partnerships and collaborations, ECOWRAP has expanded its reach and worked with local government initiatives like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The startup’s growth also includes the Bhayli initiative, which empowers women by upcycling waste materials into handcrafted home décor items. These products are sold both online and offline, promoting sustainability while creating economic opportunities for women in rural areas.

Looking ahead, ECOWRAP aims to scale its AI-driven waste management solutions, raise $1 million to enhance its technology, and play a key role in building Jaipur’s first “dumping-free” city. The startup plans to expand its reach, both within India and internationally, focusing on its waste upcycling initiatives and increasing its impact in the circular economy.

With the waste management industry rapidly evolving, ECOWRAP’s vision is to drive innovation, empower communities, and reduce landfill waste, all while offering valuable products that promote a cleaner, more sustainable future.
