The Man Behind FirstCry: Supam Maheshwari’s Journey to Building Asia’s Largest Baby Products Retailer

The Inspiring Journey of Supam Maheshwari: From Startup to FirstCry’s Success

Supam Maheshwari has come a long way from his early days as a mechanical engineer in Delhi to building FirstCry, Asia’s largest baby care products retailer. His entrepreneurial journey is not just about creating a billion-dollar business but also about recognizing untapped market opportunities and shaping a new industry. Today, FirstCry stands as a giant in the market with a unique blend of e-commerce and offline retail, driven by Maheshwari’s strategic vision.

From Humble Beginnings to Business Innovation

A graduate of Delhi College of Engineering and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, Supam Maheshwari’s journey began in 2000 with the founding of Brainvisa Technologies, an e-learning startup. Despite the dotcom bubble burst, Maheshwari navigated the challenges and grew the company, eventually selling it to Indecomm Global for $16 million in 2007. The experience taught him valuable lessons about cost-efficiency, business resilience, and the importance of cash flow — insights he would later apply to FirstCry.

The Birth of FirstCry: Spotting a Market Gap

In 2010, Maheshwari co-founded FirstCry with Amitava Saha. The idea was born from a personal frustration — Maheshwari found it difficult to find quality baby care products in India while traveling abroad for his own child. This realization sparked the idea for a business that would focus solely on baby care products, something India lacked at the time.

The timing was perfect: as societal changes took place, with more young mothers returning to work and families becoming nuclear, the need for a reliable, all-encompassing platform for baby products was evident. The market was ripe for disruption.

Overcoming Initial Challenges

The road to success wasn’t easy. FirstCry entered a market where 90% of sales were dominated by traditional offline retailers. With limited choices and access to baby-specific products, Indian parents were forced to make do with adult alternatives. Maheshwari’s vision was clear: create a one-stop shop for baby products that catered to the specific needs of parents.

Starting with just 1,000 products on its platform, FirstCry grew rapidly, but the business came with its own challenges. From managing warehouses to ensuring last-mile delivery, Maheshwari had to tackle a wide range of logistical hurdles. “Selling products that range from 5 gm diaper pins to 25 kg car seats requires expertise,” Maheshwari shared. His solution was simple: become a specialist, not a generalist.

Pioneering the Omnichannel Approach

In 2012, Maheshwari took a bold step by becoming the first online baby retailer in India to launch offline stores. This omnichannel approach has since been emulated by numerous e-commerce businesses. With over 1,000 FirstCry and BabyHug stores across 508 cities, the company has solidified its place as a market leader. In addition to its flagship retail stores, FirstCry also operates Pine Kids, Cute Walk, and Babyoye among its in-house brands, providing a full spectrum of products for parents and babies.

In 2015, Maheshwari took another big leap by launching XpressBees, a logistics company that initially handled FirstCry’s orders and later grew into a third-party logistics service. This move helped streamline the delivery process and further enhanced the customer experience.

FirstCry’s Global Expansion

As FirstCry continued to scale, Maheshwari expanded its reach beyond India to countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The brand’s expansion into international markets has made FirstCry not just a national leader, but a global one. With plans to open more stores and further grow its business, the upcoming Rs 4,194 crore IPO marks a significant milestone in its journey.

“We’ve built something unique addressing a massive $120 billion market. I’m excited about what’s ahead,” Maheshwari said in a recent interview. The IPO, set to open in August 2023, will help fuel the company’s growth, providing it with the capital to expand its footprint and product offerings even further.

The Future: Compounding Growth and Value

Maheshwari’s vision goes beyond just achieving short-term success. “Great companies always persist through cycles, creating value for shareholders and customers alike,” he says. His commitment to building something lasting has driven FirstCry’s steady rise, and he believes the best is yet to come.

Legacy of a Visionary Leader

Supam Maheshwari’s journey is one of perseverance, vision, and adaptability. What started as a simple idea to provide quality baby care products to Indian parents has now transformed into a globally recognized brand. Through FirstCry, Maheshwari not only revolutionized the baby care retail market but also created an entirely new business segment. His ability to spot opportunities, adapt to market changes, and continuously innovate has made him one of India’s leading entrepreneurs.

Conclusion: A Brand That Changed the Baby Products Market

Supam Maheshwari’s story is an inspiring one for entrepreneurs everywhere. From humble beginnings to becoming the force behind FirstCry’s phenomenal growth, Maheshwari has proven that with the right vision and determination, it’s possible to turn a simple idea into a billion-dollar business. As the company moves forward, there’s no doubt that FirstCry will continue to lead the charge in reshaping the way parents shop for baby products worldwide.
