Swiggy CEO Sriharsha Majety Breaks Silence at IPO Debut, Reflects on Journey
In a rare public appearance, Swiggy CEO Sriharsha Majety took the stage today at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Mumbai to celebrate Swiggy’s much-anticipated IPO debut. Known for his low-key approach and avoidance of public attention, Majety’s presence at the stock listing ceremony was a significant moment for the food delivery giant, which has transformed into a leader in India’s bustling food-tech sector.
Unlike his high-profile counterpart, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal, who is active on social media and frequently engages with the public, Majety has preferred to stay away from the limelight. Despite his reclusive nature, today’s event marked a turning point, as Majety joined his leadership team to witness the milestone that positions Swiggy as one of the most exciting players in the Indian food delivery and quick-commerce industry.
The Beginning of Swiggy: A College Project Turned Global Success
Reflecting on Swiggy’s journey, Majety shared a personal anecdote from his time at IIM Calcutta, where the idea for the company first took shape. “I completely forgot about it after that college project finished. And then, in a very different way, again came across it, without knowing it [consciously],” he recalled. “For that idea to have first gotten executed is in itself a rarity. But to execute it at the size and scale that we have right now is an absolute miracle,” Majety added.
Majety’s gratitude toward his team was evident as he acknowledged their collective efforts in building Swiggy into the market leader it is today. His remarks highlighted how Swiggy’s journey from a college project to a billion-dollar food delivery company was nothing short of extraordinary.
Swiggy’s IPO: A Direct Challenge to Zomato
As Swiggy takes its big leap into the stock market, it positions itself directly against its publicly listed competitor, Zomato, and Zepto, which operates in the quick-commerce space. However, industry analysts are cautious, pointing out that Swiggy lags behind Zomato in several key operational metrics.
“I don’t expect a bumper listing as the broader market is extremely weak,” said Aditya Shah, founder of Mumbai-based Hercules Advisors. “Swiggy lags Zomato in most operating metrics, which is a dampener.” Despite these concerns, Swiggy’s IPO is a pivotal event that underscores the company’s ongoing expansion and ambition.
A Historic Payday for Swiggy Employees
Beyond the financial implications for the company, Swiggy’s IPO also represents a historic payday for its employees. Nearly 500 Swiggy employees are set to benefit from Employee Stock Options (ESOPs) as part of the IPO. With projections indicating a payout of around ₹9,000 crore in ESOPs, this move will make Swiggy’s program one of the largest in India’s startup ecosystem.
This substantial payout is expected to create significant wealth for many employees, further strengthening their connection to the company’s long-term success.
Sriharsha Majety: A Rare Public Appearance
While Majety has largely stayed out of the public eye, today’s appearance marked a significant moment in Swiggy’s journey. Unlike Deepinder Goyal of Zomato, who has built a strong social media presence and engages with the public regularly, Majety remains relatively private, posting infrequently on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), with his last post dating back to May 2023.
Despite his quiet demeanor, Majety’s role in Swiggy’s growth has been instrumental. His leadership, paired with a dedicated team, has propelled Swiggy into one of India’s most valued food-tech companies.
