Chanel CEO Leena Nair Advocates for Compassionate Leadership: ‘People Don’t Care for Empathetic Leaders’

Leena Nair, the dynamic CEO of the iconic French fashion house Chanel, is breaking the mold of traditional corporate leadership by advocating for empathy, kindness, and compassion at the top of the business world. While many see business as a field driven by profit margins and tough decisions, Nair believes that these decisions must still be made with a human touch.

In a revealing interview with the Stanford Graduate School of Business’s “View From The Top” series, Nair discussed her philosophy of compassionate leadership. Despite her belief in the importance of benevolence, she acknowledged that empathy in leadership often goes unnoticed or even undervalued in business culture.

“Do the Tough Things, but with Compassion”

“I truly believe in benevolence, kindness, compassion, and empathy,” Nair shared during the conversation. “You have to do tough things in business, but doing them compassionately is very important to me.” She added that it’s not just about making difficult decisions but doing so in a way that considers the people behind those decisions. “Doing it properly, keeping the person in mind, is what matters most.”

Nair’s approach to leadership is grounded in the belief that empathy should be integral to business operations. She believes that leaders must make decisive choices but always with consideration for their team members and stakeholders, particularly those impacted by the decisions.

The Importance of Listening to Diverse Perspectives

In addition to empathy, Nair is a staunch advocate for the value of diverse perspectives in leadership. “If I’m in a meeting, I want to listen to every voice,” she emphasized. For Nair, diversity of thought is a critical element of effective leadership. “I truly believe in collective intelligence. I believe everyone’s voice matters, not just the ones who speak loudly,” she explained. This inclusive mindset, she believes, helps foster innovation and better decision-making.

The Challenge of Empathetic Leadership in Business

Despite her strong advocacy for compassionate leadership, Nair expressed that business environments often fail to recognize the value of empathetic leaders. “We don’t hear this enough in business; people don’t care for compassionate and empathetic leaders,” she noted. “We don’t see enough role models like that.”

However, Nair remains resolute in her mission to lead with empathy and set an example for other leaders to follow. “Do the tough things, do it decisively, but do it with compassion. Do it keeping the human being at the end of it, who’s impacted by your decisions, in mind,” she added.

Putting People at the Heart of Business

This focus on empathy is not new for Nair. In a previous interview with TIME.com, Nair reflected on her career of over three decades, including 30 years at Unilever before becoming CEO of Chanel. “The one thing they will tell you about me is that I really put human beings at the center of everything I do,” she said. “It’s not lip service for me.”

Her leadership philosophy extends beyond business decisions; Nair stresses the importance of personal connection with her team members. “Remember people, their names, their stories, the trivia, what’s going on with them,” she advised. “I do believe if you put people at the heart of the business, they will care about the business.” She believes that fostering an environment of care, respect, and listening will naturally lead to employees who are committed, passionate, and engaged with the business.

A New Era of Leadership

Leena Nair’s leadership style is a reminder that business success is not solely determined by profits and targets, but also by the way people are treated along the journey. As businesses face increasing pressure to adapt to changing global dynamics, her call for more empathetic leadership is gaining traction, especially as companies rethink what it means to be a responsible and people-centric organization.

Nair’s advocacy for compassionate leadership is not just about being kind; it’s about being a decisive leader who understands the human impact of their decisions and puts people first. In the fast-paced world of fashion and business, it’s a bold stance that could inspire a new wave of leadership focused on respect, understanding, and care for employees, customers, and communities alike.
