SoftBank Lowers Holdings in Ola Electric, Continues as Key Investor

Japanese investment giant SoftBank Group has reduced its stake in Ola Electric Mobility Ltd by selling a small portion of shares through open-market transactions. Despite the divestment, SoftBank remains one of the largest shareholders in the electric vehicle startup.

The sale, conducted over several months, has drawn attention as SoftBank continues to manage its portfolio in the rapidly growing Indian EV sector.

Details of the Stake Sale

Regulatory filings reveal that SoftBank’s investment arm, SVF II Ostrich (DE) LLC, sold nearly 9.5 crore equity shares of Ola Electric between September 3, 2025, and January 5, 2026.

The cumulative sale represents about 2.15% of Ola Electric’s equity, which triggered mandatory disclosure under Indian takeover regulations, as any sale crossing the 2% threshold requires public reporting.

Change in Shareholding

Before the transactions, SVF II Ostrich held 69.16 crore shares, equivalent to a 15.68% stake in Ola Electric. After the sale, its holdings declined to 59.7 crore shares, or a 13.53% stake.

The regulatory disclosures did not provide reasons for the partial divestment, leaving room for speculation about portfolio adjustments or strategic financial management by SoftBank.

SoftBank’s Position in Ola Electric

Even after the stake reduction, SoftBank continues to be a major investor in Ola Electric. The Japanese conglomerate has backed the company for several years, supporting its growth in the competitive Indian EV market.

The move is seen as part of SoftBank’s routine portfolio management rather than a loss of confidence in the EV maker, given the company’s position as a key shareholder.

Implications for Ola Electric

SoftBank’s partial divestment is unlikely to impact Ola Electric’s operations or strategy, as the company retains strong financial backing from other investors.

The Indian EV sector continues to attract global interest, and SoftBank’s ongoing involvement signals continued faith in the long-term potential of the market.

Final Takeaway

SoftBank’s sale of a 2.15% stake in Ola Electric reflects standard investment portfolio adjustments. While it marks a reduction in holdings, the company remains a significant shareholder, continuing to influence and support Ola Electric’s expansion in the fast-growing Indian EV industry.
